Survivors Tell Their Stories

Tanner Health System touches the lives of thousands of people each year, and each person has their own unique experience and a personal story unlike any other.

Tanner is sharing those stories now.

People who have had a personal experience with Tanner are standing up and sharing their stories online at www.tanner.org/mystory. Their images are gracing billboards, print ads and Web sites. You may recognize them. They are your neighbors, members of your church, your friends and loved ones. Through their stories, Tanner tells our own story.

Roy Richards Sr Cancer Center Honored

Tanner's Roy Richards Sr Cancer Center was recently recognized as the best Small Practice example of Customer Service by Hematology and Oncology News and Issues. Tanner was recognized among many applicants within the small practice catagory. However, one of the panelists wrote "What is even more notable is that (Tanner) was in the small practice catagory - showing a focus on excellence that would put many larger practices to shame."

We recognize the importance of investing in the most advance technology available to help conquer cancer. More importantly, we recognize the person conquering cancer. Thank you for helping make us #1!

2009 Merchants Making a Difference Campaign

Tanner Medical Foundation is partnering with businesses this fall through the "Merchants Making a Difference" campaign to support women in west Georgia with breast cancer. Area merchants, churches and civic groups are encouraged to join the "Merchants Making a Difference" campaign, which will be held October 1-31, 2009.

By participating in "Merchants Making a Difference," organizations can help women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer but have no insurance. Proceeds raised from this event will assist these women in purchasing items at the Tanner Boutique at Tanner Breast Health, a shop that helps women look good and feel better while undergoing cancer treatment. The boutique sells items such as wigs, scarves, post-mastectomy bras and breast prosthesis to help women return to their pre-cancer image during their cancer treatment journey.

If you know of a business or organization interested in participating in the 2009 "Merchants Making a Difference" campaign, please forward this information. To register a business or organization, visit www.tanner.org/merchants. For more information, call 770.836.9871.

Hometown Heroes

In 1999, I was diagnosed with stage 3 lung cancer. I had never smoked and in fact grew up in a smoke-free home. I was very surprised.

It was by accident the tumor was found. I was an active runner with no symptoms when I went to the hospital for possible removal of an overian cyst. Because of my history (breast cancer, 1987), the doctors decided to remove my ovaries. During my pre-op work-up, a chest x-ray revealed a lung mass. A later biopsy proved that indeed the mass was a 3-cm tumor in the upper lobe of my right lung.

Though the ovaries were removed from fear they were the primary source of my lung mass, results showed the ovarian mass to be benign. The lung was the primary.

I underwent 10 rounds of chemotherapy and 36 radiation treatments. Finally, in July 2000, I had surgery to remove the two upper lobes of my right lung.

I believe in the power of a positive thinking. I was not willing to let lung cancer defeat me. Today, I am healthy...and THRIVING!

Two years ago, after a mammogram and biopsy on my left breast, I was told I had breast cancer. I tried to talk myself into not being afraid because, at the time, my husband was going through chemotherapy for lymphoma.

After choosing my surgeon and enduring most of the treatment process, it became likely that my husband would finish chemo and I radiation at about the same time. We planned a trip to celebrate, but God had a different plan.

Fortunately, Roy Richards Cancer Center at Tanner has a well trained and compassionate doctor and staff. Having had a second and third series of treatments for different ailments, I became more dependent on Ashley, Lisa, and Lauren for encouragement. I began to consider them my friends as they had made a frustrating and very difficult time in my life more acceptable. Karen Vance was equally as wonderful as she helped us in many ways as I have seen her do with so many others. How blessed we are to have the availability of a local facility with physicians, staff, and technology rivaling the best hospitals in the state.

THRIVER! – Joan Borders
